Press Release Distribution Tutorial

Once you've written your press release, you want to ensure you get the widest range of target exposure possible. This tutorial includes a good overview of how to build and distribute to your media list.

Build a Local Distribution List First :

For best results in traditional media, always submit to our local media first. They are most interested in local stories and it’s the easiest place to get quick exposure.

You can do this by looking for submission information:

  • In newspapers
  • In local interest magazines
  • In organization newsletter
  • On local TV news and talk shows.

If you have a copy of the publication, you can search for any submission information in the publication itself or visit the company website to find out how to submit a press release.

Pick up the phone to find out if the contact information is up-to-date and specifically to whom you should address your press release. It will get more attention if you address it directly to a specific person. You’ll also want to find out what the preferred format for the press release (ex. email, fax, snail mail, etc.).

Conduct Further Research

Use these directories to find more local media. You can also use them to find publications of interest outside your local area.

One of the best places to search is Yahoo News & Media

You can refine your search by region as shown below:

When you click on “by Region”, you’ll see a screen like this and you can choose the appropriate country, region or state. You will be able to break down your search further to a specific area after that.
